Considering gluttony as sin in the context of a religious ecology and other thoughts

Bible verses such as Proverbs 23:20 and 1 Corinthians 6:12 warn against the dangers of gluttony and associating with gluttons.  Gluttony is waste, overindulgence, and lazy in nature.  When Jesus performed the miracle of bread and fishes, he commanded his disciples to collect the leftovers to save.  Growing up in a southern baptist church, the blindness towards these principles were apparent, and in retrospect the influence of american consumer culture probably was responsible for much of this.  This is one side of the extreme, the other side would be extreme monasticism.  Either in excess is inhuman.  One must live in period of feast and fast.

Iroquois Creation Story Paper Presentation (Amanda Capper)

 During today's class, one of our classmates shared her essay on the Iroquois creation story. I thought this was actually really interesting, because I had never heard of it before. One thing that struck me as particularly interesting was the main theme of reciprocity and balance. For example, the earth (Gaia) as an independent resource was interesting to me. Through Gaia, other environmental constituents also spring up, such as trees, grasses, dirt, the ocean, the rivers, etc. These features give humanity sustenance, breadth, and life. This is where the reciprocal practices come from. Using these materials and the natural world for our benefit, yes, but there's more to life than just this.  I've always thought that the Native worldview is so much better than our own worldview.
