Passover Seder

This week, we had a Passover seder. I thought it was really fun, because I had never participated in a seder before. I liked trying and eating different foods, like the horseradish and the matzo. At first, I assumed it was just like any other meal in which you gather all the food you want on your plate, sit down at the table, and then chow down. I soon realized that I was wrong! This became evident to me when I took a bite of the matzo with the lettuce, enjoying it, then I looked around the classroom to see that no one else was eating! I stopped chewing and tried to hide that I had "broken the rules."

I also enjoyed Dr. Redicks lesson afterwards where he discussed the symbolism of the foods. The ridges of the matzo, the lettuce, the apples, dipping the vegetables in salt water, etc. As someone with a background taking communion in church, I understand that certain tastes can have deeper meaning. I think its actually really beautiful. Although it was just for the class, I felt a deeper spiritual meaning with what we were doing. I am not Jewish, but I can easily see why this offers such warmth, light, and hope for the Jewish community.

Also, it was really cool to use a lighter to light a candle, because I don't think I've ever done that before in such a setting, lol!
